The Antisemitism of Lajos Esztergár, Mayor of Pécs during the Holocaust
Evidence from his Private Correspondence

The efficient transfer of close to 440,000 Jews (Braham 2016: 1507) from the Hungarian countryside to foreign concentration camps (nearly all to Auschwitz) in the spring and summer of 1944 would not have been possible without the cooperation of Hungary’s mayors and other local officials. Were collaborating mayors primarily motivated by antisemitism, careerism, or fear? While much work needs to be done in this area of Hungarian history, insights into the mind of one mayor, Lajos Esztergár (1894-1978), of Pécs, have become possible with the release of a large collection of his personal correspondence in 2024 (Dr. Esztergár Lajos iratai). While the areas of his collaboration are, for the most part, well documented, his attitude toward that collaboration has been debated by historians and advocates of local memory policies since the weakening of the communist regime in the mid-1980s and especially after its demise at the end of the decade. Esztergár’s letters provide us with a clear view into his feelings and thoughts on the “Jewish problem.”
